Landsat 2 was launched on January 22, 1975, two and a half
years after Landsat 1. Landsat 2 carried the same sensors
as its predecessor: the Return Beam Vidicon (RBV) and the
Multispectral Scanner (MSS). The RBV instrument was
primarily used for engineering evaluation purposes while
the MSS continued to systematically collect images of
Earth. In February of 1982 after seven years of service,
Landsat 2 was decommissioned.

Landsat 6
On October 5, 1993 the EOSAT-owned Landsat 6 failed at
launch after not reaching the velocity necessary to obtain
orbit.
The satellite did not achieve orbit because of a ruptured
hydrazine manifold. The separation from the booster rocket
occurred properly, however, the ruptured rocket fuel
chamber prevented fuel from reaching the apogee kick motor.
This failure resulted in the spacecraft tumbling instead of
accumulating enough energy to reach its planned orbit.

Far InfraRed and Submillimetre Telescope
Herschel Space Observatory
Swapped long name and acronym. Updated scope note.
Originally called "FIRST," for "Far InfraRed and
Submillimetre Telescope," the spacecraft was renamed for
Britain's Sir William Herschel, who discovered in 1800 that
the spectrum extends beyond visible light into the region
that we today call "infrared."
The Herschel Space Observatory is a space-based telescope
that will study the Universe by the light of the
far-infrared and submillimeter portions of the spectrum.

LISA
Corrected spelling error.
Swapped long name and acronym.
Added scope note.
The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is a joint
ESA/NASA mission. It is a three-spacecraft mission,
designed to detect the 'ripples' in space given out when
very massive objects undergo strong acceleration. For
example, they are produced when a black hole swallows a
massive neutron star. Such ripples are called
'gravitational waves' and LISA will be the first mission to
try and detect them from space.

Vega missions
The twin-spacecraft Vega project was perhaps the most
ambitious deep space Soviet mission to date. The mission
had three major goals: to place advanced lander modules on
the surface of Venus, to deploy balloons (two each) in the
Venusian atmosphere, and, by using Venusian gravity, to fly
the remaining buses past the Comet Halley.
The entire mission was a cooperative effort among the
Soviet Union (who provided the spacecraft and launch
vehicle) and Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, the German
Democratic Republic (East Germany), Poland, Czechoslovakia,
France, and the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany).

Landsat 4
Landsat 4 was launched on July 16, 1982. The Landsat 4
spacecraft was significantly different than that of the
previous Landsats and Landsat 4 did not carry the RBV
instrument.
In addition to the Multispectral Scanner (MSS) instrument,
Landsat 4 (and Landsat 5) carried a sensor with improved
spectral and spatial resolution, i.e., the new satellites
could see a wider (and more scientifically-tailored)
portion of the electromagnetic spectrum and could see the
ground in greater detail. This new instrument was known as
the Thematic Mapper (TM). The Landsat 4 TM instrument had
seven spectral bands. Data was collected from the blue,
green, red, near-infrared, mid-infrared (2 bands) and
thermal infrared portions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Missions and Projects
The Missions and Projects Facet lists NASA missions and
projects (as in launched experiements, not missions as in
organizational directorates). It has been derived from
multiple sources of information. The principal sources were
the 1.0 version of the NASA Missions and Projects
vocabulary, and the websites of the various missions and
NASA centers. This facet is largely an authority list of
mission and project names and acronyms. A small amount of
categorization of the missions and projects ahs been
performed, based on the location of the mission/project, or
the location of the object of its study. For example, the
Hubble Space Telescope is in Earth orbit, but its purpose
is to study deep space phenomena. Therefore it is
categorized as a Deep Space and Science Mission.
Missions are also categorized by whether the mission had a
crew or not. Large families of missions, such as the
Shuttle, Apollo, and Explorer missions also have been made
into categories.
The categorization of past, current, future, and potential
missions which was in the 1.0 version of the facet has been
removed due to the frequency of changes as missions are in
planning stages.
